Stolz Project

Client Requirements: Located in a luxurious high rise condominium, the dated 1970 style kitchen ceased to evoke a sense of richness and comfort. The appliances and color scheme were original to the clients home. The space needed to be updated for efficiency as well as aesthetically. The clients goal was to incorporate an eating space in the kitchen with a more open floor plan conducive to entertaining, an updated color scheme, and a more elegant and sophisticated feel which included the use of natural light.

Design Solutions: Situated on an interior wall, separated from the den and restricted by two mechanical chases, the entire kitchen was cramped, dark and uninviting. In addition, the high rise condominium was regulated by its own strict building codes and low ceilings. For both functional and aesthetic reasons, the existing space was extremely inadequate for the clients needs and lifestyle. Soundproof materials needed to be used in the floors as well as walls.

The solution was to remove the walls adjacent to the den, open the space to allow for improved traffic flow, enhance the natural light and provide for entertaining. To create a more spacious feel, the soffits were removed to visually raise the height of the kitchen. Floor to ceiling pantries were added to provide ample storage. Cherry cabinetry was selected for its rich warmth that matched the color tones in the cross cut travertine floor. Black diamond marbled in-lay was used to match and tie in with the existing floor. The black upholstered bar stools in cherry wood were selected as an accent to compliment the black trim of the microwave, cooktop and oven. Stainless steel rods were used for a high tech sophisticated support for the counter top overhang. Cylinder nickel pulls echo the clean lines of the stainless steel rod supports and appliances. A visually high impact mono-point pendant fixture was used as an accent light over the peninsula mirroring the dramatic shape of the wall sconce on the chase facing the den. Can lights were used to cleanly and efficiently illuminate the room. The result was an elegant updated kitchen with a flow of natural light, improved traffic flow and function.
