Sailor Project

The goal of this project was to open the space, bring in natural light, update the color scheme, and open up the casual den and kitchen for informal entertaining.

The client’s home was built in the mid-l970’s and was lacking architectural detail and interest. There were structural support walls that had to stay. These divided the two areas and left the kitchen dark and closed in. Soffits had been used above all wall cabinets giving a closed and stuffy feeling to the room.

The soffits were removed between the kitchen and the den in order to effectively incorporate the two spaces. This created a welcoming area for social functions and casual TV viewing. The sink was relocated under the window, with a view of a newly landscaped side patio. Under-cabinetry lighting was added, as well as updated recessed can lighting and ambient lighting over the breakfast table. Rich warm tones were selected for the wall color. Maple cabinetry was chosen for its unique warmth and elegance. Crisp white millwork and four fluted columns (two for structural support) and crown moldings were added for architectural interest. Granite countertops, backsplashes, and appliances were selected with the objective of easy maintenance.
