The kitchen of this classic home built in the 195Os, was small, lacked adequate counter space, storage and light. The client requested a more modern look while keeping the original architectural integrity of the home. A small home office, TV, fax and coffee bar were additional requests for the two-cook kitchen.
The solution: incorporate the breakfast area, open up the wall adjacent to the dining room, update color scheme and appliances, add secondary sink with coffee bar and increase the natural light as well as task and ambient lighting.
The door and drawer fronts of the custom cabinetry, crown molding and light valance were specifically designed for the client. The designer also selected a color scheme that complimented not only the client’s impressive artwork but also the designer’s choice of custom maple cabinetry in warm yellow ochre. This combined with the poured terrazzo countertops were selected for a European “Olde World” feeling, maintaining the Mediterranean flavor of the exterior. Gleaming stainless steel appliances, stainless steel toekick and stainless banding in the glass wall cabinet doors added punch and vitality to the “modern” feeling of the remodeled kitchen.
The updated appliances, which included Sub-Zero and Dacor in stainless steel, catch the light from the pendant fixtures above the peninsula. This in turn results in light cascading back into the room creating a sparkling effect, mirrored by the other stainless appliances.
Result: A beautiful and efficient blending of the clients goals into a more open, spacious and modem floor plan while maintaining the architectural character of this classic home.
